YOUR COMPLETE GUIDE TO FACIAL TONER

YOUR COMPLETE GUIDE TO FACIAL TONER

Have you ever wondered how toner would help your skin in the long-run? What goes on right underneath the skin and why is it considered a necessity nowadays?

When you walk into a store, a skincare specialist asked you this question. “Tell me about your skincare regime. Are you doing the 3(+1)-steps routine”? Asked yourself, were you caught off guard? What was your reaction- tongue-tied?

Many of us do. In fact, a handful of us are not educated on the importance of a 3(+1) steps routine, which consists of Cleanse, Tone, Moisturise (+ Sunblock). Admit it, no one taught us the proper usage of the skincare regime and how important is it to have them applied every day. Fear not, Tropika Club will take you through this journey today.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A TONER?
Toner- the very first step to the daily skincare routine right after you cleanse your skin, yet many do not understand the value of using a toner. It provides multiple benefits to your skin, and it caters to different skin types. One important question- alcohol-based or no?

First and foremost, Toner serves multiple benefits to your skin-

  1. Acts as a double-cleanse to your skin
  2. Removes the last traces of dirt and excess oil on the skin
  3. Prepares your skin for the next step of products- allowing for better absorption
  4. Balances the pH on your skin
  5. Control acne
  6. Reduce the appearance of pores
Looking at the list above, how close are you to getting a toner? Are you already sold? If you have more confusions, worry not! Read through for a deeper understanding on the big T word.

WHAT KIND OF TONER SHOULD I USE?
For starters, we would highly recommend using an alcohol- free toner unless specify by a skincare professional. An alcohol-free toner refreshes the skin without stripping away the natural moisture on the skin, and providing the other benefits listed above.

For drier skin types, you should look for humectant ingredients that contain the following-

  1. Glycerin
  2. Propylene glycol
  3. Butylene glycol
  4. Aloe
  5. Hyaluronic Acid
  6. Sodium lactate
These hydrating toners will be your best friend and it will make a huge difference in the long run.

Whereas astringent toner (or alcohol toner as many may call it), this is a stronger form of toner. It contains a higher concentration of alcohol, and more often than not, it contains salicylic acid to help fight pimples and blackheads. This kind of toner is suitable for people with combination to oily skin type as well as skin that is acne-prone. However, certain astringents can be drying if overused. Again, I always asked a skincare professional for advice before proceeding.

WHAT IS THE APPLICATION METHOD FOR TONERS?
Firstly, remember that toner is ALWAYS applied right after cleansing. This is a confusion that many have and The Tropika Club is here to emphasise on this again. Damp the cotton pad with toner and glide it across your skin to remove the last traces of dirt and excess oil to prepare your skin for the next step of product. With a layer of moisture on the skin, you may apply your next stage of skincare routine (essence, serum, moisturiser) for better absorption. Trust us, you will love it!

ARE THERE ANY SIDE-EFFECTS TO APPLYING TONER DAILY?
We get it. This is a common question that was asked by consumer when the subject is brought up. Extracted from https://www.huffpost.com/entry/toner-necessary_n_2124513, Dr MacGregor mentioned that “every person needs an individualised skincare regimen. Using a toner can be a nice way to add active ingredients like retinoids, antioxidants and exfoliants to your existing products”.

Hence, as long as the right toner is chosen for your skin type and concerns, it should complement to your daily skincare regime, in turn providing the necessary benefits in the long run.

Whichever products you choose, it should leave your skin feeling refreshed. There should not be any irritations on the skin if you chose the right one. Hence, The Tropika Club would highly recommend that you get your skin assessed before deciding on the right toner, as toner will provide a long-term benefit to having a skin you desire!

As we like to say it, to better skin ahead!
